The tip of the iceberg: HR Leaders uncover only 1/3 of their workforce’s skills gaps

Former Goldman Sachs Vice-Chairman and Harvard Business School Professor Robert S. Kaplan last year published his co-authored report What’s Your Language Strategy and made waves across the HR and Business community. He suggests that “Language is a vital link to your talent management strategy. (…) you can turn language into a source of competitiveness.”

HR Kaplan HBS PictureNew research reveals 9 in 10 lines of business leaders face communication skills gaps within their teams and 2/3 don’t partner with HR to address these.* This disconnect challenges HR Leaders who struggle to gauge the true extent of their organisation’s skills gaps.

For those who have watched Undercover Boss, here’s a familiar scenario: The CEO of a well-known hospitality chain visits different branches under cover and gains a whole new perspective on the real challenges his divisional heads and line managers have swept under the carpet. This is the same challenge that prevents HR leaders from gauging the true skills gaps in their organisation.

This is the very same blind spot Professor Kaplan and co-author Tsedal Neeley revealed in their much talked-about HBR article. However, awareness of the blind spot is one thing – being able to address it and incorporate strategic talent development and management as part of a business strategy is a completely different matter.
