Rosetta Stone Announces Settlements with Eleven UK Individuals for Copyright and Trademark Infringement

2010 August, 05

Rosetta Stone, the leading language-learning software company, has strengthened its stand against piracy with the announcement of settlements in copyright and trademark infringement cases against eleven individuals in the UK.

These individuals pirated software, including the unauthorised copying, downloading, sharing, offering for sale and selling of counterfeit Rosetta Stone® language learning software. As a member of the Business Software Alliance (BSA), Rosetta Stone is committed to fighting software piracy and educating the public on the risks associated with using pirated software.

Rosetta Stone has reached settlements in cases in London, Sussex, Lancashire, Essex as well as in Yorkshire (Leeds), West Midlands (Birmingham), Angus County (Scotland) and Londonderry (Ireland)

Furthermore, Rosetta Stone is actively pursuing a number of criminal cases for prosecution with the aid of the relevant local chapters of trading standards in the UK as well as with agencies in several European cities.

"Rosetta Stone is firmly committed to combating software piracy and we are pleased that our unique enforcement programme has effectively addressed the illegal activities by these individuals whose actions have harmed consumers," said Michael Wu, general counsel of Rosetta Stone.

"Pirated software is not only an issue of copyright but also a wider problem for the consumer as such programs frequently contain spyware, which can steal personal and confidential information, and may also cause operational failures from viruses or malware."

Before purchasing Rosetta Stone language-learning solutions, consumers should verify that a seller is authorised to sell the program. To report piracy of Rosetta Stone products or inquire about the legitimacy of Rosetta Stone products, consumers can e-mail piracy@rosettastone.co.uk.

More information on software piracy is available from the Business Software Alliance at www.bsa.org. Visitors to the site can find information on the risks of software piracy and access resources on effective software asset management. The BSA encourages reports of suspected software piracy regarding both businesses that use unlicensed software, or individuals and organisations that sell pirated software over the internet. Confidential reports can be made at www.bsa.org.
