  • Spanish is a romance language, just like Italian or French. All in all, nearly 500 million people across the globe speak it – making it the second most commonly spoken language after Mandarin Chinese. So really, it's a numbers game—speak Spanish, and you open up numerous chances for connection.

Learn Spanish and the only obstacle on your world trip will be the question: were to start? Apart from being the major language in Spain, it is spoken in South America, Latin America but also in the United States, parts of Africa and in the Philippines.

There is no single culture surrounding the language, but rather an extensive historical integration of many cultures. Yet most Spanish-speaking cultures share a passion for fútbol: Uruguay won the first FIFA World Cup in 1930 and Spain is one of the major football powers in the world. Another shared passion seems to be dancing: Many famous dance styles have their roots in Spanish speaking cultures including the Flamenco of Andalusia or the Tango of Argentina.

  • Spanish Flag A new study by the British Council finds that not French, Arabic or even Mandarin Chinese is the most important foreign language for the UK, but Spanish. The study identified the 10 most important languages for the UK's future based on economic, geopolitical, cultural and educational indicators.

    Top 10
    1. Spanish
    2. Arabic
    3. French
    4. Mandarin Chinese
    5. German
    6. Portuguese
    7. Italian
    8. Russian
    9. Turkish
    10. Japanese

These findings don't suggest that people in the UK are learning the wrong languages, but the UK needs to develop in a wider range of languages, and in far greater numbers in order to reap the economic and cultural benefits available to them. It's no surprise that the UK has a lack of language skills, but at the moment, 75% of the UK adult population are unable to speak any of these languages well enough to hold a conversation!

  • I recently went to Paris for the weekend. I have never been to Paris so was looking forward to the trip but haven't spoken a word of French since I studied it for my GCSE's.

As much as I enjoyed Paris, the thing I found completely bizarre was my absolute gut instinct to reply to everyone in Spanish. Even though French is the language I had three years of academic lessons in, Spanish is what seemed natural to me.

I was also surprised at how much Spanish I seemed to know and was able to communicate too. I guess a lot of my Rosetta Stone classes have taught me stuff subconsciously as I didn't realise I'd remember as much information as I had been taught. I even found myself straining to listen to other Spanish people on holiday just to see if I could understand what they were talking about. I understood a few words but still have a long way to go..

  • There's something rather special about sharing a new language with your child. We've just discovered that our toddler will be learning Spanish in her reception class from September this year. I'm over the moon, as it means we'll be able to learn together—she at school and I with the Rosetta Stone TOTALe online course.

During our Spanish holiday a couple of weeks ago, I surprised myself by having the confidence to try some words and phrases—confidence that I'm sure came from knowing that, thanks to the pronunciation checker in TOTALe, I was saying things just right. At almost four years old, our daughter Curly Girl has no such qualms. She was more than happy to throw Spanish words and phrases out at anyone who passed by. Ahh, the self-assurance of children!

A case in point: one day we went to the lovely town of Roses on the northeastern coast near Girona, and I ordered us a lovely and typical meal of tuna and tomato salad—so simple yet so delicious—followed by seafood paella. All in Spanish? Well, almost all. I make no bones about the fact that I made liberal use of asking how to say something in Spanish: "¿Cómo se dice ‘xxx' en español?" The owner was more than happy to help out, errr … in her absolutely flawless English, of course (*blush*).
