After discussions with my doctors and therapist, they recommended that learning a new language would help stimulate my brain. According to them, learning a new language increases brain function and creates new neuro-pathways. I chose to learn Portuguese, a common language in Brazil. I'm interested in the Brazilian culture and the beauty of the people. My goal is to speak the language to better understand the culture and develop new relationships. The Rosetta Stone techniques are very motivating and helped me to build my self-confidence in speaking a new language. For example, the visual aids were extremely helpful on a cognitive level. The lessons stimulated and challenged my mind without taxing it, in other words it was stress and anxiety free. Taking the course I developed new neuro-pathways and stimulated my brain, which has helped me in my recovery. My husband and I work in resort real estate. Most of our projects have been in California. We were hoping to be reassigned to Central or South America. I knew some spanish from living in Costa Rica and I tried to teach him, but there was no hope. He couldn't even roll his R's. I purchased Rosetta Stone for him at Christmas time and within 3 months he could carry on simple conversations. I was stunned and so I am now taking the course to learn more. Now, instead of moving to a spanish speaking place, we're moving to Dubai in the Middle East. But then, departure day came. Armed with Rosetta Stone confidence, I was able to call the shuttle company from the airport and say "Bonjour, j'ai une reservation. Mon nom Mme. Speed" They knew I was a struggling American, but answered me slowly in French and I was able to follow the instructions on where to meet the shuttle bus. I had leaped my first language hurdle and there was no stopping me now, I checked into the the hotel, my room was "c'est beau", I was ordering meals and stating that the food was "c'est delicieux". The waiters would grin. The nicest thing that I did, a lady stopped me on the street with a map in her hands asking, in French, where was this particular shop. She was talking really fast and I could barely keep up, and I took a look at her map and could see what she was looking for, it was a shop that I had just passed and was able to say, sort of, "c'est bas juste la rue". She was a little taken back and said, in English, "you are not French? You look French"...I chuckled and she chuckled and took off for the shop. The language course gave me the confidence to navigate a transit system, read menus and ask for a ticket for one to a museum. It is a small victory for a middle age woman who wants to go to a country and amuse the locals with her confidence and ability to speak their language. I was born in Germany, but when i was very young my family and I moved to the USA. All of my family spoke German and because I was so young I had not even started talking by the time we left Germany. My mother is from Thailand, yet she never taught me Thai. This was a difficult challenge for me when I was finally able to meet my older estranged sister in Thailand in 2004. I have to be able to communicate with the staff at the center, with the children and their families and the locals in the community where we stay.
