• Reading Turkish is relatively easy due to the majority of letters of the alphabet having just a single corresponding sound.
• In Turkish, there are three diacritics—marks added to letters that influence pronunciation and create new letters.

• The Turkish language uses suffixes added to root words to alter the meaning of the word. For example, the word sokak (street) becomes sokakta (in the street).
• In Turkish, the same suffix can have an alternative spelling, depending on the final letters in the root word. For example, while sokak becomes sokakta, ev (house) becomes evde (in the house).
• There are no gender categories in Turkish, meaning that words are not considered either feminine or masculine.
• Polite speech is used to address strangers or elders. Formality in Turkish takes the form of the plural ‘you.’
