About the English language

There are over 300 million native English speakers across the world and millions more speak it as a second language. It is the primary language for over 50 countries and a dominant international language in a variety of fields including communications, science, business and entertainment.

English Learning Tips

  • Contractions are often used in both written and spoken English. A contraction is the pairing of two words into a shorter form. For example, the words ‘it is’ are often written and pronounced ‘it’s’. Context usually dictates whether the shorter or longer form is used.
  • English spelling is irregular, meaning words that sound the same are written in different ways.
  • Some English words are spelt the same but have different meanings and pronunciations.
  • English nouns have singular and plural forms, but no gender (masculine or feminine) forms.
