Farsi (Persian) Learning Tips

  • Farsi is written and read from right to left, however numbers are the opposite, written from left to right.
  • Context plays a key part when reading and writing Farsi. Certain vowels are not written, but we'll teach you how to determine the word from the context of the sentence.
  • Letters can also change shape depending on whether they appear at the beginning, middle or end of a word.
  • When speaking Farsi, it is common to omit the subject of the sentence.
  • Meanings of Farsi words are conveyed through the placement of stress. Rosetta Stone can help master this aspect of pronunciation by helping you to check and practise against native Farsi speakers.
  • Upper and lower cases are not used in Farsi.
  • How you address someone in Farsi depends on your age and relationship to the person you are speaking to.
  • Farsi numbers are written using a modified version of Hindi numerals.
  • There are no gender forms in Farsi; the language does not have separate words for ‘he’ and ‘she.’
  • Farsi verbs have many forms of past tense. For example, a different verb form would be used to describe an action performed recently and one completed a long time ago.
