About the Hebrew language

Hebrew is spoken in Israel and in Jewish communities worldwide. It is one of the official languages of the State of Israel along with Arabic. The first written evidence of Hebrew dates back to the 10th century BC.

Hebrew Learning Tips

  • Hebrew is written and read from right to left.
  • You generally won't find vowels in written Hebrew. Instead, they are represented by a system of dots and lines which appear underneath, above or inside consonant letters. However, you will find vowels in religious texts, poetry, and children’s books.
  • Some Hebrew words are spelt differently but pronounced the same. This is because Hebrew spelling follows historical conventions, representing differences that no longer exist. With Rosetta Stone, you'll gain the knowledge you need to understand these differences.
  • Hebrew verbs have different gender forms depending on whether the subject is masculine or feminine.
  • A Hebrew adjective can have its own article.
