Huw Carter's interview on UK schools' lack of investment in language training
A recent study has found that foreign language learning is at its lowest level in UK secondary schools. A consequence of this lack of language training, the UK economy is reportedly losing around £50bn a year in failed contracts due to a lack of language skills in the workforce. Less than half of workers feel they are prepared for bilingual conversations. This is despite language training having proven benefits for businesses, including increased employee productivity, performance and loyalty to their employers. If learning a language is so beneficial, why aren’t more people doing it?
