How Do You Say I Love You in Spanish
If you want to say “I love you” in Spanish, you would say “te amo” or “te quiero.” “Te amo” is generally more appropriate for your close family and spouses/partners, while “te quiero” is generally better for friends, extended family and others.
Learning idiomatic Spanish phrases can seem intimidating. But the basics are simple enough to get a handle on––especially if you already speak related “romance” languages like Italian or French––and even English, too. Italian and French are historically related to Spanish in the same language family––while English uses many French and Italian/Latin words that we call cognates (lingual cousins of one another). This is why you’ll frequently find English words like “normal” that are almost identical in French (normale), Italian (normale), and Spanish (normal). Many learners also find that Spanish has a simple to understand system of pronunciation, as well as rare irregularities in pronunciation––which is unlike English. Additionally, the Spanish alphabet is an almost exact match to English and many other European languages. There are only three extra letters you’ll want to learn: ch (chay), ñ (eñe), and ll (elle).
With Rosetta Stone’s immersive approach, you’ll learn the language, not just the words. What makes Rosetta Stone unique is that we prepare you to use your new language in the real world. So it’s not just about the features, but what you’re able to do because of them. That way, you’ll be ready to handle any situation and sound great doing it.
It takes some work, but if you combine individual practice in the Rosetta Stone award-winning mobile app and practice with other Spanish language learners in Live Tutoring, you can have absolute control over your learning speed and, ultimately, your long-term progress.

As you might already know—or have just noticed—Spanish does have some differences in pronunciation that can make it a challenge for new learners, at least early on. One of the most common difficulties people have is the rolling sound for r’s, which can take some serious practice to get the hang of. Spanish has what’s known as a trilling sound to the “R” that you make by pushing your tongue up against the roof of your mouth. Teachers and language experts sometimes tell new learners to focus on making the double “tt” sound in the words “hitter” or “litter” as the closest equivalent.
Consistently improving your pronunciation means having regular feedback and making corrections, practicing, and persisting until your brain and tongue learn how to form the particular sounds that make up the language. That’s why Rosetta Stone embeds our patented speech-recognition engine called TruAccent into every one of your lessons. TruAccent instantly compares your voice to thousands of native and non-native speakers, so you get real-time feedback for the most accurate pronunciation. It’s also adjustable, which allows you to fine-tune your accent.
Once you’re comfortable with the Spanish fundamentals, it’s natural to progress to the longer phrases that are the backbone of daily conversations and interactions.
